Peckham Levels aims to support local talent to create thriving enterprises. Now in its second year of operation, the project is looking to build on the successes of its first year and continue to expand its impact and reach.
All of our Members are independent businesses, mostly drawn from the local area, and all of them share a passion for the local area. A percentage of the revenue from the project is used to support social action programmes offered by the Make Shift Foundation, our charitable arm.
We are a small team with a start-up mentality, where everyone goes beyond the call of duty to achieve our ambitious goals. We are looking for talented, flexible people who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty and are driven by the opportunity to inspire positive social change. ABOUT THE ROLE
The Junior Marketing Manager role is an exciting opportunity to raise the profile of Peckham Levels as a space for local people to create thriving enterprises. You’ll be responsible for the day-to-day marketing of Peckham Levels and managing its digital channels, as well as contributing to and executing larger cross-media marketing campaigns with the support of colleagues from across the company.
Broadly, you’ll be:
Contributing to the design of strategy that will shape the narrative around Peckham Levels and its social impact.
Working with the Events Curator to promote the diverse range of events at Peckham Levels.
Managing Peckham Levels’ local marketing activity and associated budget.
Overseeing our main channels, across digital, print and press.
Curating and creating story-led content to build engagement and tell the story of Peckham Levels as a project
Telling the stories of our Member businesses to raise their profile and fuel their success.
At its heart, this role is about telling the diverse stories of the businesses we work with and the local people we aim to support. We’re interested in meeting people who share our passion. People who understand the powerful potential of small, hyper-local businesses. We know that marketers come in all shapes and sizes, and are open to applications from people from a variety of professional backgrounds. The most important thing is that you have an eye for a story, are keen to learn, are highly organised and are able to build strong relationships.
This probably means that you:
Are highly creative - you can think around corners and perform dizzying feats of mental acrobatics when it comes to solving complex challenges with simple solutions.
Love to learn - we’re a close-knit team, and often collaborate on projects outside of our expertise. We need someone who can thrive on the positive but can also take feedback constructively and, vitally, use what they’ve learned to get better.
Like being accountable - in our small team, we’re each directly responsible for our own work and we need someone who is able to take responsibility immediately and effectively from day one.
Are an all-round marketing whizz - you might not have formal training, but you just ‘get’ what marketing is about - telling stories and making sure they’re in front of the right people..
What this is likely to mean in real life, is:
You have 1-3 years of experience, gained in-house or at a marketing agency.
You have managed multiple marketing channels (like facebook, instagram and flyering) or, if you’ve not done it before, can tell us how you’d approach it.
You understand how to measure the success of a marketing campaign.
You are a natural storyteller.
You have self-managed a diverse workload, prioritising and making difficult decisions about which activity will have the greatest effect.
You’re great with people, and have managed multiple relationships productively.
Ideally, you know and love Peckham and South East London - you get the vibe, and want to be part of the growth of the area as a creative, entrepreneurial community that is open to all.
SUCCESS IN THIS ROLE LOOKS LIKE
We’ll measure your success against KPIs in three main areas, and you’ll work with the marketing team to set ambitious, but achievable, targets.
Site footfall (week to week growth)
Ticket Sales / Event Attendance (for ticketed events)
Positive press stories generated
Traffic to the website
Member satisfaction score for Marketing on site
Member reviews/Project reviews on platforms including Google Reviews, Trip Advisor
Feedback from community organisations
Diversity of stories on our channels
Uptake of Make Shift social action programmes
Diversity of audience for marketing output
Location: Peckham Levels, although you will be required to sometimes travel to other Make Shift project sites as the job requires.
Salary: £23-28k DOE
Working Days and Expected Working Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday, with flexible start times and a 1-hour lunch break every day. You will be required to work some weekends as required by the role, and overtime will be paid where appropriate and agreed with your line manager
Holiday: 30 days plus Bank Holidays.

Stage 1 - Telephone Interview - a 30-minute initial chat with the Head of Marketing at Make Shift.
Stage 2 - In-Person Interview - a 75-minute meeting with Make Shift’s Marketing Lead and Head of Marketing along with colleagues from the Events and Marketing, and the Peckham Levels site team where you will be asked to make a short presentation.
