Pop Brixton was our first project. It has used recycled shipping containers and reclaimed materials to transform an empty plot of land in the heart of Brixton, South London, into a thriving community space that is now home to around 50 local businesses.
Our members include food businesses, retail boutiques, creative studios, social enterprises, a youth radio station and a community barbershop.
The idea was born when Lambeth Council asked the community to propose ideas for a positive meanwhile use for a barren plot of land. Local Architect Carl Turner devised a proposal that imagined using containers to create supportive space for local, independent businesses and community groups. It opened its doors in May 2015. It now houses a full-time community of amazing independent businesses and has attracted well over 1 million visitors since it opened.
Pop Brixton is currently planned to remain in place until October 2018.
