Urban Britain is heavily divided. Funding for local services has been slashed. Local people have borne the brunt of these cuts, leaving the most vulnerable people to fend for themselves. Local talent has been left unlocked.
Local Authorities are under tremendous pressure to deliver against targets set in Westminster. This always leads to compromise.
In many areas, as local people are displaced by economic or social forces, the situation is exploited by big business. Property developers, retail chains and absentee landlords systematically suck the soul from once-vibrant urban communities. Local people become priced out of the area and ‘gentrification’ begins wholesale.
This sequence of events has become accepted narrative for urban Britain. It’s ‘just something that happens’. But we know that it doesn’t have to be this way.
We can do better.
Make Shift works with Local Authorities, landowners and local people to create groundbreaking community developments that deliver financial return while looking to solve some of society’s toughest problems.
